In “Tribute to a House Fairy,” Rima Amyuni gives herself the task to achieve what seems today outside the range of pictorial possibilities: to paint from direct observation. Committing yourself to observe the world without restraint means essentially to bring forth the lived elements otherwise obscured by the clairvoyance of a certain approach to painting. In a combination of radiant exteriors and warm interiors, the painter makes scalpel incisions at the heart of the art historical landscape, introducing the presence of domestic workers against this grand background.

About the Artist
Rima Amyuni was born in 1954 in Lebanon and earned a degree in fine arts from the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, now part of Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design, followed by a three-year period of study at Columbia University in New York City. Upon her return to Lebanon in 1985, Rima has taught art at different academic institutions and has been widely exhibited in solo and group shows. In 1995 Amyuni was awarded the first prize in painting by the Sursock Museum during the XVIIIth ‘Salon d’Automne’. Rima lives and works in Yarzé, a suburb of Beirut on a hill of greenery and sea views that have informed and inspired her work.
