Beirut Municipality Cracks Down on Garbage Disposal and Commercial Deliveries

The Beirut Municipality has announced new rules for garbage disposal and commercial loading and unloading across the city. The measures aim to improve public cleanliness and safety, ease traffic, and preserve Beirut’s urban appearance.

The measures apply to commercial, tourism, educational, and service establishments. This also includes restaurants, cafés, nightclubs, hotels, hospitals, universities, schools, major shopping centers, and large residential complexes.

The New Measures

According to a municipal notice signed by Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud, these are the new measures:

Garbage disposal:

Establishments must dispose of their waste only in the designated dumpsters between 8 PM and midnight.

Deliveries:

Loading, unloading, and delivery of goods to establishments is restricted to the hours between 5 AM and 7 AM.

Dumping or placing garbage on sidewalks, roads, or beside dumpsters outside the designated hours is prohibited. The delivery of goods outside the permitted hours is also prohibited.

Anyone who drives around Beirut knows how frustrating this can get. Trucks stopping in the middle of already tiny, crowded streets to unload goods can quickly bring traffic to a standstill, especially when there’s barely enough room for two cars to pass in the first place.

The notice states that violations will be subject to legal measures, with reports to be filed against those who fail to comply.

The municipality has tasked the Beirut Municipal Police, the Public Cleanliness Department, and other relevant municipal authorities with monitoring implementation of the new rules and taking the necessary measures against violators.

The notice also identifies Hamra Street as a pilot area for strict enforcement of the new measures. The municipality says the results of the trial will be evaluated with the possibility of extending the regulations to other streets across the capital.
