As Lebanese continue to reel and rage from the catastrophic blast that shocked the capital on Tuesday August 4th, 2020, news just broke of the arrest of Badri Daher, Director General of Lebanese Customs.
This comes less than 24 hours after the arrest of Hassan Qoreitem
, Head of the Beirut Port by the military police in the Lebanese Army.
Both officials had been previously blaming one another for the negligence that left 2700 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate stored at the port, near some of the city’s most populated areas.
As the investigation into the blast kicked off, both Daher and Qoreitem, alongside 5 other port officials, were placed under house arrest as per a decision by the Lebanese government. They were also subject to a travel ban and their bank accounts were frozen.
Could it all just be theatrics? Or is justice taking its course in Lebanon for once?
