As crime escalates and people become more desperate to make ends meet a few months into 2021, they have taken to theft of electric cables and manhole covers to sell as scrap metal for profit.
Mohammad Mutlak Jassem has been sentenced to two years in prison after being caught stealing manhole covers and selling them for profit, and the minor who was accompanying him is awaiting sentencing.
Events went down in Karantina, where a Beirut guard patrol stopped the two culprits on a Tuk-Tuk that contained 4 manhole covers. After being interrogated with, they confessed to stealing the manhole covers and selling them in Sabra. It was made clear that the manhole cover thefts were extended to Ashrafieh, Al-Basta, and Karantina facing Beirut’s Fire Department, and that they were being sold to an unknown/anonymous person nicknamed Al-Karduhi who resides in Sabra and whose Tuk-Tuk was being used to commit the thefts.
This comes after road safety NGO YASA has called upon law enforcement to punish thieves to the fullest extent of the law dues to the sheer danger of the situation.
It wasn’t too long ago that a young child fell into one of these open holes and sadly passed away.
The uncovered holes will continue to cause safety hazards if not handled properly.
Meanwhile, an eco friendly waste management company called Cedar Environmental headed by CEO Ziad Abi Chaker shared a new and innovative method to replace the stolen metal sewage covers by
creating covers made out of recycled single use plastic.
