Sewage Water Pours Straight Into Batroun Beach

If you thought the fuel crisis would be the only reason why you won’t be hitting Batroun’s beaches this summer, think again.

Horrifying footage circulating on social media over the weekend shows untreated sewage and waste pumping right into the waters of Salaata Beach in Batroun after the treatment plants stopped operating due to the lack of power.

Aside from the dreadful smell, the sewage waters are bound to cause a great deal of damage to just about every element in the ecosystem.

As dreadful as it sounds, this does not come as a surprise with the majority of water bodies in Lebanon marked as polluted and unsafe.

According to a recent study conducted by the National Center for Marine Sciences (NCMS) and published by the National Council for Scientific Research (NCSR), only 24 out of 36 monitored Lebanese beach sites were considered safe to swim in, with lower rates of both bacterial and chemical pollution than other areas.

The sewage flood pouring into the beach will obviously result in a much greater ecological crisis. Back in April,a large number of fish had died in Qaaroun Lake due to an outpour in contaminated sewage water.

We’ll now be swimming in our own shit, literally.
