Schedules are updated every Thursday.
Let’s take a step back from Lebanon and head back to 1920s Harlem, when jazz music was taking over. Also known as Lindy Hop, the dance that was made popular by jazz singer Cab Calloway took over the dancefloor of every gig up until the 1940s. So influential that it has its own swing dance community in Beirut.
Jazz was known for bringing people together, and people were bopping and hopping to the music all over the world. Many underestimate the jazz community in Lebanon, and though relatively small, its influence is anything but.
The Beirut Swing dance community is bringing back lively jazz nights with weekly swing dancing nights. Their motto is inspired by the famous Duke Ellington: “it don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing!”
And we couldn’t agree more. Fellow swingers and jazz lovers understand the rush of adrenaline that comes with swing. Once you start, you can’t seem to stop.
Teaching the 123s of the Lindy Hop, Charleston, and ShimSham, Beirut Swing is making sure the people of Lebanon witness traces of 1920s Harlem. And you can join in on the fun if you’re ready to be thrown into the sparkling world of jazz!
Every Monday, Beirut Swing hosts Swing dancing nights at Aaliya’s Books. Starting 8:30pm, the literary bar and café turns into a busy dancefloor with smiling swingers. If you’re interested in taking part in Swing nights, give them a call on +961 1 566 375 or +961 81 245 162.
However, those who want to polish their swinging skills should take part in their classes. Not only will you get the chance to meet the wonderful people behind this community, but you’ll also learn a thing or two about the beauty of jazz.
For inquiries about their classes, call +961 76 074 733.
