Minister of Telecom: No internet in Hamra = none at Central Bank = no salaries

As Lebanon continues to grapple with what is being described as a country-wide telecom shutdown, Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with the Minister of Telecom Johnny Corm earlier today in an attempt to resolve the matter (kind of).

Corm and Mikati discussed the Ogero employee strike which had halted all maintenance works on the network, as well the operation of Ogero’s 1515 hotline since Wednesday morning.

In a bid to make ending the strike appealing to employees, Corm said, “All the employees are aware that interruptions on the telecom network harms them as well as all Lebanese. For example, if there is no internet in Hamra, then there is no internet in the Banque du Liban, and therefore they have no possibility of receiving their salaries. So the employees are are aware that everyone is implicated in this issue”.

Of course this does not take into account that the employees’ primary demand revolves around being paid at the Sayrafa rate in order to account for inflation. In June of 2022, Ogero increased the price of its subscriptions and bundles nearly 2.5X, it is being said that employees who are still being paid at the 1,500 rate are demanding that the same increase be applied to their salaries.

Carrier pigeons it is!
