In honor of January being Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, Saint George Hospital is providing free
pap smear exams for women between the ages of 25 and 65 years old. The exams will be held at their Primary Healthcare Center every Monday and Friday until the end of January.
What is a pap smear? A pap smear is a screening procedure for cervical cancer, which tests for the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix. It is recommended that these screenings should start at the age of 25 and be repeated every 3 years until the age of 30 after which they are recommended annually.
How does it happen? The quick procedure includes the collection of a small sample from the cervix using a speculum and brush. The cells will be looked at under the microscope and checked for any abnormalities.
Pap smears are a vital part of female health screenings. Kudos to Saint George Hospital for making this procedure an accessible one to all.
