Did you know that February 1st is Arab Women’s Day? Well now, you do. On this occasion, we are choosing to highlight the works of some groundbreaking Lebanese women that are making waves both locally and internationally.
1. Tima Deryan
Tima Deryan has a good collection of firsts. In 2019, she made headlines as the first Lebanese woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In December of 2022, she came back with another historic achievement as the first Lebanese woman to ski to the South pole.
2. Nadra Assaf
Dr. Nadra Assaf is the founder of Lebanon’s Al Sarab Dance Foundation, which includes a highly prestigious dance school and company. With many dance productions across the world, Dr. Assaf continues to be at the forefront of the arts in Lebanon and the MENA region.
3. Mia Atoui
Clinical psychologist Mia Atoui is the co-founder and president of Embrace, a leading mental health NGO in Lebanon. Atoui has spearheaded the fight for providing accessible mental health services in Lebanon, particularly during the economic crisis.
4. Joa Antoun
Joa Antoun is a talented tattoo artist who is known for her incredible and innovative work with breast cancer survivors, this includes offering free realistic nipple tattoos or scar concealment tattoos for those who have underwent a mastectomy.
5. Nadine Mezher
Nadine Mezher’s work in the tech industry made waves, landing her to be on the Forbes’ list of women in tech. She is the co-founder and CMO of the first hybrid automated investment platform, Sarwa. The platform has raised more than $25 million in funding.
6. Nidal Al-Achkar
Hailed as “The Grande Dame of Lebanese Theater”, Nidal Al-Achkar is the founder of Lebanon’s Al Madina Theatre. During her many years of work, she has contributed greatly to the world of theater in the country, transforming it into a growing and accessible art form, and overseeing the production and distribution of a never-ending list of local productions.
