We Tried Urban Onion For the First Time, Here’s Our Honest Review

We’ve been wanting to try Urban Onion for a while now, but never got the chance to squeeze it into our weekend night plans. There are just too many spots on our bucket list, and it’s been hard to make the time (and money) to try them all.

What we ordered

Right off the bat, we love that their menu is straight to the point. With only three burger options available, it’s great for indecisive foodies that hate overcomplicated menus. Though there are some off-menu items you can order, you can stick to the basics if it’s your first time visiting.

Here’s what we ordered:

The Mayor — The best seller that their team will most likely recommend if you’re opting for beef. Made with onions, American cheese, pickles, and their chef sauce.

Side Chick — For the fried chicken lovers, this burger is made with lettuce, pickles, and aged cheddar cheese. You can always opt to switch out the fried chicken with a grilled option.

These were a great first impression as picky burger eaters. The Mayor strikes the perfect balance because you can properly taste the meat, and the sauce doesn’t overpower the flavors. Meanwhile, the Side Chick is a solid choice for traditionalists who prefer to keep things simple, with a crispy chicken fillet and familiar flavors that don’t try too hard to reinvent the classic chicken sandwich.

Pops on the Block — This is basically bite-sized golden and crispy chicken that you can order as an appetizer.

While we didn’t feel queasy after the burgers, it probably would have been the better choice to share the popcorn chicken with a larger group of friends rather than just two people. They were only slightly overdone, which made them a little dry after a while, especially once we’d made our way through most of the portion.

What we loved about Urban Onion

On those days when you’re craving a burger that won’t make you regret your life decisions once you’re done, this Gemmayze spot does the job. Urban Onion is actually one of the few spots that serves no-frills burgers in the city.

It’s actually a lot harder than it should be to find simple bites that don’t overwhelm your palate halfway through the meal, but Urban Onion gets the basics right without relying on gimmicks or excess.

And their fries were surprisingly the best thing about the meal. We don’t really expect much from French fries as a side, but they were perfectly golden and crispy.

The downsides

It opens at 6:30 PM, and it’s kind of a bummer if you want to have lunch midday on a weekend. It’s better for those days when you and your friends want to have a bite before you go bar hopping in Mar Mikhael.

We’re going to list this as a downside (but it’s not Urban Onion’s fault): we didn’t have any room left for dessert. The food was so filling, and we unfortunately couldn’t bring ourselves to have any of their desserts. Maybe next time.
