A Lebanese delegation just wrapped up the first round of mediated talks to demarcate Lebanon’s maritime borders.

The talks have been described as “technical,” solely dedicated to setting up agreed upon zones and borders. This morning’s meeting took place in Ras Naqoura’s UN post, and it was held in an outdoor camp setting due to COVID-19 concerns.
The Lebanese delegation reportedly refused a commemorative photo of the talks.
The maritime territory that is disputed comprises 856 square kilometers of the Mediterranean Sea which each party claims as their own exclusive economic zone. A separate track of talks to discuss the 13 disputed land border points is to be held at a different time, should parties agree.
The next round of talks is scheduled for October 28.
