Megaphone Commemorates Marginalized Victims Of August 4

In a recent post shared on their Instagram account, independent media platform Megaphone shared a list of marginalized victims of the August 4 explosion.

The list includes 76 victims of foreign nationalities, only 28 of which have been recorded on the government’s official list of victims. The current official lists includes only 191 names, but reports revealed that there are over 217 victims of the August 4 blast. Not only were the non-Lebanese victims not mentioned, but the Anti-Racism Movement also reported that foreigners affected by the blast were deprived of aid and medical assistance, and some experienced forced eviction.

This blatant racism is not surprising, as our government (and even its people) has a history of discriminatory behaviour. Justice for blast victims also includes non-Lebanese victims. Just last month, a racist law was proposed to exclude the non-Lebanese families of the victims of the August 4 explosion from the state’s compensation plan.
