Alephia 2053: The Lebanese Animated Film Everyone Should Know About

Lebanese films never fail to impress, but did you know about this animated gem released back in 2021? Created by illustrator Jorj Abou Mhaya and writer Bassem Breish, Alephia 2053 is an Arabic language adult animated film that imagines a dystopian future with striking visuals and a powerful story.

Here’s what you need to know about this feature:

According to this awesome breakdown by Aim by Frame, this animated film is widely considered the first adult-oriented Arabic animated feature film.

Unlike most Arab animation, which targets children or families, this film specifically engages mature audiences and tackles dystopian and political themes.

What is it about?

Set in the fictional Arab country of Alephia in 2053, the film follows a society under the oppressive rule of dictator Aleph II. A group of activists rises up and rallies public support to overthrow the regime in a revolution reminiscent of the Arab Spring.

By blending political commentary with dystopian visuals, the film explores themes of freedom, resistance, and hope for a better future.

Where can you watch it?

The production company Spring Entertainment actually uploaded the 1-hour feature on YouTube! You can watch it here with subtitles available in Portuguese, French, English, Arabic, German, and Italian:

Is it the ONLY Lebanese animated film out there?

Not at all! Lebanon has a growing animation scene. One standout is Waves ’98, written and directed by Lebanese filmmaker Ely Dagher back in 2015. The film, a 15-minute animation, explores themes of youth, longing, and the complexities of life in Lebanon.

Though it’s much smaller in scale compared to Alephia 2053, Waves ’98 gained international recognition! It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film. You can read more about it here.
