Grey wolves were once more common in Lebanon, but their numbers declined over decades due to habitat loss and hunting. The recent sighting is the first confirmed presence of wolves in Akkar in many years. Local environmentalists say it shows that the species may be slowly returning to parts of Lebanon.

The wolves were spotted by nature cameras installed to monitor wildlife. Observers described the moment as significant for conservation, as it indicates that Lebanon’s forests are still capable of supporting top predators.

Back in April 2025, an Indian grey wolf was captured on camera in the heart of Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve. She stepped out of what appeared to be her den and to be heavily pregnant! Both sightings show that grey wolves are still present in Lebanon’s forests and that the species may be slowly recovering.
