When Lina Hijazi left her home in Kfara, she didn’t have time to think about what to pack. Like many others fleeing the escalating violence, the departure was sudden. But one decision was clear to her from the start, and that was her cat had to come along.
She said: “This is my cat, my sweetheart. She’s the first one I rescued.” The small animal has stayed by her side throughout the difficult journey, quietly accompanying her through every uncertain moment.
Lina and her husband first left their village hoping to find shelter in Bchamoun but continued to Saida, since most shelters were full. For the past three days, Lina and her cat have been on the road, sleeping in a pickup truck.
The cat may not understand everything that’s happening, but for Lina, having her close offers a small sense of comfort in the middle of a horrific journey.
