In a Time of War, Le Monnot Theater Keeps Culture Alive

During times of war, culture is one of many outlets that bear the brunt of disruption, often pushed aside in favor of what feels more urgent. While stages go dark, galleries close, and creation is put on hold, Beirut’s Le Monnot Theater chooses to keep going against all odds.

The arts themselves have taken a heavy hit. During war, many aspiring artists struggle to make a living from their craft, with venues closed and opportunities scarce. Le Monnot continues to support them by providing workshops, mentorship, and platforms to perform, while also giving back to those in need.

They’ve also hosted open conversations, supported initiatives like Matbakh Maryam through fundraising, and focused on small, direct actions, from bringing joy to displaced children by organizing toy drives. If you would like to donate, you can drop by their theater until 5:30 PM to support the forcibly displaced children currently sheltered at Paroisse St. Joseph.

Even during war, cultural spaces matter. They give artists a place to work, communities a place to gather, and everyone a reminder that life and creativity continue.

By supporting Le Monnot, you are not only helping keep performances and workshops alive, but also sustaining a space where artists can create, communities can gather, and culture continues to thrive despite these difficult times. You can support their theater by donating to this GoFundMe link, or simply attending plays and workshops they host every week.
