171 Buildings In Beirut Are At Risk Of Collapse, Head Of Engineering Syndicate Warns
The Head of the Syndicate of Engineers in Lebanon has revealed that around 171 buildings in Beirut are at risk of partial or total collapse following the Beirut Port explosion. Most of the at-risk buildings are located in Rmeil and Mdawar.
In a preliminary assessment of the structures, The World Bank revealed that around 50,000 residential units were damaged, and 80% of residential buildings and infrastructure were affected aside from the destruction to the port.
Thus far, there has been no official statement nor an action plan from those responsible as to what is to be done with these at-risk spaces.
While the blast continues to exacerbate our pre-existing political and financial crisis in Lebanon, legitimate questions around its details linger, such as why the cargo remained in the port for six years despite warnings by various state officials of its danger.
