Meet The Lebanese All-Female Heavy Metal Band

“People think we’re devil-worshippers” shared guitarist Lilas Mayassi of Slave to Sirens, Lebanon’s very first all-female heavy metal band that was formed back in 2016.

In a genre of music that is seemingly dominated by men, vocalist Maya S. Khairallah, lead guitarist Shery Bechara, bassist Alma Doumani, percussionist Tatyana Boughaba, and Lilas Mayassi on rhythm guitar are shattering stereotypes and paving a path for women in trash metal and rock music in the Middle East.

The influx of female performers to the genre provides diversified lyrical and contextual material that may otherwise not exist. Resisting what is seen as “traditional femininity” and shattering gender norms, Slave to Sirens carry the message of empowerment and self-expression. This is yet another step towards gender equality in music.

Their first EP Terminal Leeches has four songs and is available on Spotify, iTunes,
and Anghami.

You can watch Slave to Sirens live at the Beirut Metal Fest that will be taking place on September 7 & 8, 2018, and check out their full interview with BBC by clicking here.
