Lebanon Ranks #107 In World Press Freedom For 2021

Lebanon has fallen another five ranks since last year to sit at #107 in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index for 2021, according to the annual rankings generated by Reporters Without Borders.

The country stood at 101st in 2019 and 102nd in 2020, only to fall to 107 this year. This comes after a particularly tense couple of years in Lebanese press freedoms, wherein many have been speaking out against what they call unjust media censorship.

The top countries? Consistently leading on the environmental and human development indexes, it’s no surprise that Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Costa Rica are ranked one through five. Last year’s #180, North Korea now proudly stands at #179 while Eritrea lands itself the position of dead last.

Published annually, this index assesses the freedoms that media can exercise in 180 countries around the world factoring in media independence, freedom, and transparency.
