Lebanon’s Powerplants May Stop Generating Electricity Mid May

Back in February, Lebanon’s Minister of Energy in the caretaker government Raymond Ghajar warned citizens that the country may no longer be able to generate power due to the lack of financial support. We do not know why he was warning us, as electricity falls under his umbrella of responsibilities.

On Tuesday, the $200 Million loan that was previously promised to Electricite Du Liban was blocked by the Constitutional Court after members of parliament appealed it due to lack of clarity. After this decision, it was revealed that in the absence of these funds, the Zouk power plant will no longer be operatation beyond the 18th of May, while others may completely stop operating in June, as shared by investigative journalist Kareem Chehayeb.

Is this another episode of the push and pull between the always crumbling EDL and funding? Or is it really a matter of days before Lebanon is in a total state of darkness?
