Recent Study Reveals 96% Of Cases Of Violence Against Women Go Unreported In Lebanon

November 25th marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. ABAAD, an NGO dedicated to achieving gender equality in the MENA region, launched a campaign under the hashtag #itsalwaystime to shed light on women’s experiences amidst the economic crisis in Lebanon.

The campaign was launched based on a study conducted by the NGO that revealed alarming numbers regarding unreported cases of violence against women. The research included 1,800 women from different regions in Lebanon, revealing that 96% of women who experienced some form of violence did not report it.

Earlier this year, there was a shocking rise in domestic violence cases in Lebanon, including the murder of Zeina Kanjo, the Lebanese mother left in critical condition after a stabbing incident, and the woman who was found dead in Kaskas under mysterious circumstances. Many women fall victim to discriminatory laws and inconsiderate religious courts that could have easily prevented atrocious acts of violence.

This year, many campaigns are encouraging women to speak up against any forms of violence they may be experiencing in order to take a step closer towards hopefully eliminating violence against women, particularly in the MENA region.
