AUB To Open New Campus In Cyprus In 2023
The American University of Beirut (AUB) is opening its new campus in Paphos, Cyprus by 2023. According to Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos, the AUB campus will inject new interest and boost the property market.
The project falls under AUB’s regional expansion strategy that was approved more than two years ago. During the last Opening Ceremony, AUB’s president Dr. Fadlo Khouri had revealed that, “To further diversify, over the course of the next 12 to 24 months, we hope to launch new AUB campuses, one to the West and one to the East of our eternal home in Beirut”. AUB also quelled fears of the Beirut campus closing by later saying, “remain strongly anchored in Beirut – our eternal home”.
The AUB Cyprus campus, which will be located in the old Carob Mills on the road leading to Kato Paphos, will cover 10,000 square meters and host 2,000 students.
The expansion was financed by AUB’s resources and by endowments from host countries and donors. AUB has put €29 million into the project, with construction set to begin in June 2022 or July 2022. Enrollment for new students is planned to commence in September 2023.
The new campus will host several departments, including computer science, economics, and business, as well as a school of civil engineering, to accommodate more than two thousand students.
Other campuses are also being planned, one in Dubai and the second one in another Arab country in the region.
AUB has been serving its community since 1866, focusing on the American liberal arts model of higher education for its educational philosophy, standards, and practices. Its objective of “changing things for the better” is still alive and well, with more than 130 bachelors’, master’s, MD, and Ph.D. programs available at its Beirut campus.
