One Dead As First Heavy Rains Flood Lebanon’s Ill-Maintained Roads

Sunday, October 24th saw Lebanon’s first heavy rainfall of the season, an event that brought with it a host of problems. The storm, which unleashed its rains all across Lebanon, left a flood of damage in its wake as the country’s poorly maintained roads and infrastructure bore the brunt of the damage.

Most notably, Zouk Mosbeh’s highway was completely flooded, creating chaos for those who found themselves trapped on the road. The high water level engulfed cars on the road, blocking traffic, trapping passengers, and causing multiple accidents. The body of a man who’s car swerved off the highway yesterday was recovered this morning by the Civil Defense. He sadly passed away due to the accident.

The volunteer Lebanese Civil Defense Force worked to assist residents affected across the country. The Civil Defense assisted vehicles stuck under the streams and houses overwhelmed by flooding water.

As winter unfurls Lebanon, residents have been left vulnerable to its cold fury. In the absence of any comprehensive plan or failsafe to deal with issues such as flooding, everyone is left to fend for themselves.

We send our deepest condolences to yesterday’s victim and hope everyone remains safe this winter.
