The Afghan Girl Sells Furniture

Everyone knows the super famous image of the Afghan girl with the piercing green eyes basically staring into your soul. She was on the 1985 National Geographic cover, and then disappeared from the public eye since.

It seems that Lebanon has found her again, and this time, on a billboard of a furniture shop called Bamboo. Check out this photo captured by tweep @alihashem_tv of the beautiful yet war-torn image of a 27-year-old shot. I believe the billboard’s text reads “What if…it is for real.” Yeah, war is for real. I find it extremely sad that something so meaningful is too easily used it something blatantly commercial.

If you’re interested, check out a more recent photo of Sharbat Gula – yes, she has a name – taken in 2002. Still penetrating, still war-torn. Not at all a furniture model.
