Syria and the Responsibility to Protect Refugees at AUB

Thursday, Mar 19, 2015
12:00pm -> 1:30pm
American University of Beirut (AUB)

The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) cordially invites you an upcoming lecture on “Syria and the Responsibility to Protect Refugees” by Tendayi Achiume, Assistant Professor of Law at UCLA.

The Syrian refugee crisis may soon be the largest since the Second World War. However, the international law regime that currently governs the refugee-specific obligations of states offers no basis for resolving a problem central to this crisis. Professor Achiume argues that a novel means of achieving international cooperation to share the cost of protecting refugees is the international doctrine of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P).

Tendayi Achiume is an Assistant Professor at the UCLA School of Law. Her research and teaching interests lie in international human rights, international refugee law, comparative immigration law, and international criminal justice.
