FADE IN: Writing for Children’s Books

FADE IN:

The class provides participants with the tools they need to write for children and will get them going on a new creative adventure. From plot, to story structure, character creation and development, you will learn what that is needed to create a story that children will love.

This class is taught by writer, Sandra Khalil, primarily in English, however Arabic and French can and will be spoken when needed in class.

First Session, August 4:
What is Children’s Literature?
– Child psychology in relation to story
– Different genres of children’s writing
– The message
– Using story as a tool

Second Session, August 6:
Character within Story Structure
– Basics of story structure
– Choosing character
– Character analysis and building blocks
– Using character to guide story structure

Third Session, August 11:
Story Structure (con’t) and the World
– Building a fun world for children
– Enhancing the world using imagination
– Using story structure to enhance the world
– Visual storytelling in children’s books

Forth Session, August 13:
– Visual storytelling
– Knowing what your illustrations will look like
– Using visuals to enhance your story
– Building your story using all the learned elements
