Beirut Groove Collective All-Nighter at Beirut Art Center

Saturday, Aug 6, 2016

For the first time, the Beirut Groove Collective (BGC) brings the region’s oldest and only strictly 45 funk and soul party to the Beirut Art Center (BAC) rooftop. The night will feature rare and obscure 45s of Northern Soul, African Funk, Deep Funk, Ethiopian Clappers and R&B Stompers, with sets from BGC co-founder and record digger Ernesto Chahoud, fresh off the back of his European tour; British Beirut-based DJ, Natalie S; Swiss reggae and soul head DJ Yukah, American, Beirut-based DJ and film director Jackson Allers and British DJ and writer Ramsay Short.

The party marks an exciting new collaboration – the perfect pairing between the BGC, renowned for their niche of underground parties that provide an alternative to Beirut’s nightlife scene, and BAC – having long provided a space and platform dedicated to contemporary art and culture in Beirut. It is held within the context of the current exhibition at BAC titled Esma’/Listen that explores through the works of 15 international artists the contemporary forms of listening. Co-curated by Marcella Lista and Marie Muracciole, the exhibition includes works by Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Francis Alÿs, Vartan Avakian, Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz, Moyra Davey, Melissa Dubbin and Aaron Davidson, Pierre Huyghe, Alvin Lucier, Christian Marclay, Olaf Nicolai, Sharif Sehnaoui, Jessica Warboys and Cynthia Zaven. The works are inspired by research on sound during the 1960s and 1970s, lead by dialogues with John cage and following the works American composer and artist Alvin Lucier. Spanning a period of three months, the exhibition is accompanied by a full program of events, workshops, artist talks and concerts.
