Beirut Oldies We Love: Super Out, One of the City’s Oldest Record Stores

Tucked away in Mar Mikhael, Super Out is the kind of place you could easily walk past without realizing what’s inside. But for music lovers, collectors, and anyone who appreciates a little nostalgia, it’s one of Beirut’s hidden gems.

Like many businesses in Mar Mikhael, Super Out was hit hard by the August 4 Beirut Port explosion. A large part of its decades-old collection was destroyed, erasing countless rare records and memorabilia. Yet the shop endured. Today, it remains one of Beirut’s last surviving old-school record stores, welcoming music lovers just as it has for more than four decades.

Super Out: a time capsule in Mar Mikhael

Opened in 1979 by Roy Hayek, Super Out has stood the test of time while the neighborhood around it transformed into one of Beirut’s trendiest districts. Surrounded by hip cafés, bars, and concept stores, stepping inside feels like entering a different era.

Hundreds of vinyl records, CDs, and cassettes fill the shelves from floor to ceiling, covering just about every genre you can imagine. You’ll always find something waiting to be discovered, whether it’s 60s rock, classic jazz, vintage pop, or rare French and German imports.

Unlike modern vinyl boutiques with neatly organized displays, Super Out embraces the thrill of crate digging. Half the fun is taking your time, flipping through stacks of records, and stumbling upon an unexpected treasure.

Hayek is just as much a part of the experience. A lifelong music enthusiast who started collecting records as a child, he’s always happy to recommend an album, play an obscure track, or share stories behind the music. His passion has helped turn Super Out into a place where music lovers connect.

You’ll also find Hayek’s curated vintage concert footage and rare performances with modern edits to create one-of-a-kind playlists. Alongside its impressive vinyl collection, the shop also carries CDs, cassettes, and digital media. And don’t be shy to ask for more unique finds. He’ll guide you to the hidden drawers of cassettes and vinyls on the second floor.

Don’t worry, he’ll give you a flashlight to sift through them.

If you need a break from the fast pace of Mar Mikhael, Super Out offers something increasingly rare. For music lovers who still cherish their Walkman, mixtapes, or custom CDs, just give Super Out your playlist and they’ll take care of the rest.
