8 Proposed Terms Instead Of “Heist”

Over the past few weeks, media and news outlets have scrambled to try and adequately describe what was happening at banks in Lebanon as depositors were holding up branches and demanding that their frozen deposits be handed over. Many (including ourselves) initially opted to use the word ‘heist,’ only to realize that that does not aptly capture what was happening. We brainstormed to try and find the right words to capture this moment as we believe we have a duty to use language that properly transmits the facts and feelings on the ground. Here are eight terms we propose to use in place of heist: 1. Retrieval 2. Recovery 3. Redemption 4. Reclamation 5. Repossession 6. Recoupment 7. Recapture 8. Restoration
