First Phase of Restoring the Mar Mikhael Railway Station Is Complete! Here’s the Progress So Far

Back in September 2025, Public Works Minister Fayez Rasamny kicked off the restoration of Beirut’s historic Mar Mikhael railway station. The €2 million project aims to preserve the station’s industrial heritage and transform it into a cultural landmark.

The first phase of the railway’s conservation is officially complete following the full restoration of the exterior of the historic Passengers Building.

UNESCO and UNIC Beirut shared the progress to Instagram. They spotlighted the project’s revival of Lebanon’s historic character and the efforts of local artisans keeping traditional skills alive.

They handcrafted and restored wooden handrails and ornamental metal frieze using special conservation techniques.

Now that the first phase is complete, restoration work will continue on the building’s remaining architectural elements.
