TL Introduces AI News Anchor “Talia” to Its Newsroom

It looks like Télé Liban‘s newest hire doesn’t need a salary or coffee breaks…just a stable enough WiFi connection.

“Talia” is an AI-generated news anchor who will be presenting news, reports, and programs on the national broadcaster. Apparently, she can read the news and deliver information in both Standard Arabic and the Lebanese dialect.

Watch Talia’s introduction by Télé Liban:

According to Tele Liban’s management, “Talia” is not meant to replace journalists or media professionals.

Instead, the broadcaster describes her as a tool that will support their work, particularly in preparing and presenting news. Human journalists will continue to handle field coverage and reporting on events.

The project was developed in collaboration with Saudi company Points and Bilal Ksassir, under the supervision of Télé Liban Chairwoman Elissar Naddaf.

It forms part of a wider plan to update the national broadcaster’s programming and introduce new technologies across its media, news, and translation operations.

But why introduce AI into newsrooms?

Bringing an AI-generated presenter into a newsroom raises questions that go beyond the novelty of seeing a virtual anchor on Lebanese television.

How will the broadcaster ensure the accuracy of the information Talia delivers? Who is accountable if she gets something wrong? And how do we distinguish between using AI as a production tool and allowing it to take on a more visible role in journalism?

And our question is, if you’re going to make an AI-generated news anchor look and sound so Lebanese, why not just hire a real Lebanese journalist to do the job? Just saying…
