Reactions To Young Woman Being Assaulted By Gebran Bassil’s Bodyguards

What seemed to be a calm Sunday lunch turned into absolute chaos after Gebran Bassil made an appearance that was met with scorn from a young woman who was later assaulted by his bodyguards.

The woman, later identified as Yasmine Masri, ran into Bassil in Manadloun’s new Batroun branch yesterday afternoon and expressed her distaste by simply saying “Tfeh”. Bassil’s bodyguards did not take her comment lightly and quickly attacked her. Masri was pushed to the ground and beaten.

In an interview with MTV, Masri discussed details of the violent interaction, saying the men repeatedly told her to shut her mouth. After the violent attack, she did not stay silent and proceeded to follow the men, announcing that it’s her right to film the situation, which resulted in another attack.

The violent backlash received a response from Bassil’s office, stating: “The time for not responding to insults is over”.

As this story broke, “al baltaji Gebran” started trending on Twitter. Here were some of the reactions:

Back in 2019, the most famous chant was based upon Bassil’s state failure. However, any such reactions from the people should not come as a surprise after the downward spiral of the financial and economic situation in Lebanon.

These insults are a result of over 30 years of negligence and corruption, and we advise the fainthearted to resign if they are not ready to face any form of aggression from Lebanese citizens.
