Religious Court Withholding Blast Survivor’s Passport After Stripping Her Custody Of Her Son

A horrifying update in Lilianne Cheaito’s story.

More than seventeen months have passed since Lilianne sustained a significant head injury during the August 4 explosion. She managed to recover from a coma and now needs treatments that are available abroad. In a cruel twist of fate, it was recently revealed that she cannot travel due to her passport being withheld by the Jaafari religious court due to an ongoing claim filed by her ex husband. Below is a Facebook post explaining the details.

On August 4th of 2020, Lilianne had gone shopping at Beirut Souks in order to buy and ship a birthday present to her husband who lived in Africa a week ahead of his birthday. The very same husband would five months later go to a religious court and seek sole custody of the child as Lilianne battled for her life. His request would be granted. He would then file claims against her that would stop her from traveling for treatment. He and his family would go on to do everything in their power to strip her of her right to custody.

Again, the Lebanese government, judicial system, and religious courts prove their patriarchal nature and incompetence in protecting a mother and her child.
