Beirut Design Week 2014

MENA Design Research Center

Living in the age of the end of print comes with uneasy responsibilities. The transition from paper to digital, far from being a swift one requires us to re-think not only the design aesthetics but also the value of visual narratives in our life. And while e-readers and tablets begin to be believable as substitutes for books and newspapers, other physical aspects of the reading experience are missing due to technological constraints. Before digital, magazines had their own way of providing nonlinear, multisensory, immersive reading experiences: we browse their pages, appreciate different paper stocks, feel motivated by the personal narrative that a good editor can infuse in the pages he creates. This talk and workshop are made to go back to the roots of what makes a magazine exciting: its design rhythm, its economic poetry, and its visual wonder. This workshop is aimed at art directors, editors, designers and general audience.
