Wasla Performance at Metro

Tuesday, Nov 25, 2014
9:30pm -> 1:00am
Metro Al Madina

Aside from its primary definition of “connecting,” the word “wasla” also refers to the specific Egyptian tradition which was practiced between the last third of the nineteenth century until the 1940s. Nowadays, Nahda is considered the ‘Golden Age’ of music for its tradition, and the art of Egyptian oüd solos.

“Wasla” is a creation developed by Tarek Abdallah proposing to renew the relationship with the Golden Age of this musical tradition through a personal approach to the Egyptian musical suite, both in terms of the composition, interpretation and improvisation.

This program consists of three wasla, taking place on three different maqäm-s/modes alternating composed shapes, semi-composed and improvised. The first wasla is composed entirely by Tarek Abdallah in Bayyätï mode. The second in Rast mode is a tribute to Mohamed al-Qasabgi (1892-1966), the greatest Master of the art of Egyptian üd in the twentieth century. Finally, the third is composed in Sikah mode.
