Lebanese University Professor Leads Road Safety Initiative in Beirut
Road safety in Lebanon remains a major concern, with many roads still lacking proper lighting, clear signage, and consistent maintenance. In a small but meaningful intervention, Dr. Christian Taoutel is taking a hands-on role in improving conditions on Beirut’s streets.
Professor and Head of the Department of History and International Relations at Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth, Dr. Taoutel is working with the Safe Road initiative to improve nighttime visibility along the Furn El Chebbak road, long known for accidents linked to poor lighting and unclear road markings after dark. Reflectors were installed on the concrete and metal dividers lining the road, adding a simple but effective layer of visibility for drivers at night. The goal is to reduce risk through practical, low-cost adjustments that can be implemented quickly, without major infrastructure work.
