Zoqaq el Blat is home to abandoned palaces and homes filled with a ton of mystery and magic (literally). Driving down one of Beirut’s busy motorways you may have noticed a small uphill road that’s covered with trees and bullet ridden buildings. At the beginning of that road is this, The Heneine Palace, that’s rather unmissable thanks to the large hole in the side of the wall.
The Heneine Palace was built within the last few years of the Ottoman rule, towards the end of the nineteenth century for a Russian nobleman, and was occupied by a long list of people including the founder of the French School of Medicine and the notorious “magician” Doctor Dahesh, who had his own cult.
In 2016, the World Monuments Fund added this endangered historic building to their watch list. Lebanon has two sites out of 50 selected worldwide sites on this list, the second being Beirut’s Dalieh of Raouche.
On May 18-21, you can join the campaign to save Beirut’s heritage that includes a virtual tour, discussions, exhibitions, workshops, site visits, food markets and more to promote this incredible event.
