13 Detainees In Roumieh Prison Infected With COVID-19
Thirteen detainees in Roumieh prison have reportedly contracted the coronavirus, according to regional news channel Sky News Arabia.
Reports about the spread of COVID-19 in Roumieh have caused panic among families of the detainees who fear disaster if quick measures are not taken, especially considering the overcrowded nature of the prison and non-existent safety measures.
In a press conference, caretaker Health Minister Hamad Hassan confirmed that there had been COVID-19 cases in Roumieh, but said infections were “among the security forces in the prison” and that “a very limited number of infections were reported among the prisoners”.
In response, the families organized a protest to call for necessary measures to contain the spread of the virus, citing prisoners’ right to adequate protection of health while incarcerated.
