Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is a concept space, the first of its kind in the region, with an emphasis on music, which serves as a hub for diverse cultural activities.

‘onomatopoeia’ is a word that finds its origin in the Greek language, and imitates or suggests the source of the sound it describes. The concept of onomatopoeia was first introduced into modern culture as early as the 1960’s, when expressions such as ‘whaam’, ‘splut’, ‘pow’ and ‘houyhnhnms’ started appearing in comic strips (Garfield), television series (Batman), literature (Gulliver’s Travels) and modern art (Lichtenstein’s paintings).

Located in the neighbourhood of sioufi, onomatopoeia is a music hub set in a calm remote area of Achrafieh, far from the daily and extenuating hubbub of the city. The space has both indoor and outdoor facilities, which allows it to function throughout the year.

Onomatopoeia aims to provide a cross-platform between different generations of musicians, and to bridge different styles and genres of music. The music hub caters not only to musicians and their ilk, but to music enthusiasts and non-musicians as well. Anyone with a penchant for music of any sort will find comfort and interest here.

The hub offers a space for musicians to gather, meet and exchange ideas, whether in the cozy environment of its coffee shop, its well-endowed library, the workshop areas, or the fully-equipped rehearsal studio.

onomatopoeia, the music hub is an non-governmental organization initiated privately.
