Firefighters Prevented From Stopping Beirut Port Fire

A series of fires have been plaguing Beirut port’s surviving grain silos since Thursday of last week. Yesterday, it was revealed that Public Works Minister Ali Hamieh ordered the Civil Defense not to approach the fire.

Hamieh cited a Higher Defense Council decision banning access to the area out of fears that the lives of the firefighters would be put in danger due to the possibility of the silos’ collapse.

A decision taken by the government to demolish the silos earlier this year was halted after complaints from August 4 victims’ families.

Activists have stated that the demolition of the silos would be equivalent to erasing the crimes committed at the port.
