Skoun Lists Safe Hospitals That Do Not Report Overdoses To Police
Earlier today, the NGO Skoun Addiction Centre shared a list of hospitals across Lebanon that do not report drug overdose cases to the police. Out of a total of 107 hospitals contacted by Skoun, only 27 were found to have policies against reporting such instances.
Many people who deal with addiction frequently avoid going to hospitals out of fear of being turned in to law enforcement. This is dangerous and greatly compromises their chances of seeking treatment.
Major hospitals on the list include the American University of Beirut Medical Centre (AUBMC), LAU Medical Centre-Rizk Hospital, and Hotel Dieu. The majority of hospitals on the list are in Beirut (7), followed by Matn (6). The list also includes some governmental hospitals, such as Daher el Bachek, Baalbeck, and Qana. The full list is:
1. Bekhazzi Medical Hospital
2. Hotel-Dieu De France Hospital
3. Geitawi Hospital
4. LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital
5. American University of Beirut Medical Center
6. Saint George Hospital University Medical Center
7. Rafik Hariri University Hospital
8. Abou Jaoude Hospital
9. Haroun Hospital
10. Middle East Institute of Health Hospital
11. Saint Joseph Hospital
12. Daher el Bechek Governmental Hospital
13. Bellevue Medical Center

15. CHU Notre Dame des Secours Hospital
16. Al Jabal Hospital
17. Baalbek Governmental Hospital
18. Dar al Hikmeh Hospital
19. Bahman Hospital
20. Mount Lebanon Hospital

22. Nini Hospital
23. Kana Governmental Hospital
24. Taanayel General Hospital
25. Al-Manara Doctors Hospital
26. West Bekaa Hospital
27. Al Batoul Hospital
Skoun suggests that “in case of a drug-related emergency request to be transferred to one of the closest safe hospitals. Adding that “overdose deaths are preventable.”
This is a really important resource as patients in need of help should be guided towards safe spaces for treatment and recovery. We hope that the rest of the 80 hospitals that still report to the police reconsider their stance and provide patients with the safety and protection they need.
