Good News: 500 Goldfinches Released Back Into the Wild in Lebanon
In a heartwarming step towards wildlife conservation, more than 500 European goldfinches (Hassoun birds) have been released back into their natural habitat in the Lebanese town of Yahfoufa, Baalbek.
The initiative was carried out by Lebanon’s Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Yahfoufa Municipality and the Internal Security Forces as part of ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity, preserve wildlife, and combat the illegal trade of wild birds.
By returning the birds to their natural environment, the initiative aims to restore ecological balance while helping safeguard one of Lebanon’s most beloved bird species for future generations.
The European goldfinch, known locally as the hassoun, is admired for its beautiful song but has long been threatened by illegal trapping and trafficking across the region.
