This afternoon, security forces arrested activist Michel Chamoun for allegedly defaming the presidency.
This provoked an angry response from protestors and fellow activists who rushed to the streets and gathered in front of the Jounieh Serail where Chamoun is still being held. The protestors then blocked Jounieh road in order to raise awareness to their basic human right of freedom of political speech.
Chamoun had become well known for his video rants that circulate on social media channels wherein he tackles issues like the revolution, the declining economic situation, and other social issues. He is being held for the below video:
Protestors vow to remain in the streets until Judge Ghada Aoun, whose jurisdiction this falls under, releases Chamoun.
This comes only days after a
Lebanese judge called for investigations into posts “insulting” the president.
What do you think of this matter? Should political free speech be a constitutional right?
