Artists Syndicate Draws Criticism After Asking Colleagues Not To “Insult Politicians”
The Syndicate of Professional Artists in Lebanon has put out a controversial statement that many activists and artists feel infringes on freedom of expression.
In the statement, the syndicate asks that colleagues in the syndicate “refrain from criticizing or insulting political parties, movements, religious figures, and their leaders”.
This comes during the most trying political crisis in Lebanon, one that has left citizens and artists penniless and without many prospects. This led to many artists recirculating the statement with the hashtag “Artists From The People”.
Several actors also called upon the head of the syndicate Jihad al Atrash to resign immediately, and for new elections to take place.
