Lebanon to Launch New Digital Platform for Passports

Lebanon’s General Security is preparing to launch a dedicated digital platform for passport applications in early 2026, allowing citizens to apply, renew, and track their passports online. This move aims to reduce in-person visits and streamline the entire process.

The launch is part of a broader national digitalization plan introduced earlier this year, designed to bring key government services online.

This isn’t Lebanon’s first attempt at digitizing passport services. Back in January 2022, General Security rolled out an online booking system to help manage growing demand.

However, the system quickly became overwhelmed as all appointment slots were booked within minutes, frustrating many users. Technical glitches and concerns over data privacy also contributed, prompting officials to suspend the platform in early 2023. Now, the government is positioning the upcoming platform as a more secure, reliable, and scalable solution.

The new passport platform is one piece of Lebanon’s wider digital government overhaul. This includes plans for a nationwide “Super App”.

Announced by Minister Kamal Shehadi, the Super App will serve as a unified platform for all government ministries. It will allow citizens to access services, like passport renewals, digital stamps from the Ministry of Finance, and future digital ID systems, all in one place.

According to Shehadi, the project will rely heavily on public-private partnerships and will require setting up a national Data Pool to securely handle user data. The government also hopes to roll out a digital ID within a year.
