End Of An Era: Metropolis Cinema Closes Down

Post-edit: Thank you to Joelle Sfeir for this correction: “the empire cinema in sofil is closing down. The metropolis association will relocate their screenings to another location”

A huge loss for independent movie lovers and cinephiles in Lebanon, we are sad to share that Metropolis Cinema in Sofil has closed its doors and kissed the city goodbye.

This cultural landmark had been screening some of the most unique indie films for the past 13 years. What started as a non-profit organization in 2006, quickly grew to be one of Beirut’s most beloved spots for foreign film fanatics and movie lovers.

Just this past summer, the cinema rang the alarm and held a massive fundraiser in an attempt to raise money to carry them through the year, but the crippling economic crisis that significantly worsened in October only made things more difficult.

Today, driving past the closed doors of Metropolis Cinema in Sofil, we sadly realize that the sight is only bound to become more and more common in Lebanon as the days tick on.

Thank you Metropolis for always hosting the most refreshing events and screenings, in the hopes that we may see you open again soon.
