Beirut Duty Free Prices Dollar At 8,000 LL With 20% Discount

Despite no official change in the Lebanese currency rates, and despite the fact that banks are still dealing with customers at 1,520 LL per USD, Beirut Duty Free have updated their pricing scheme with the reopening of the airport.

Editorial Purpose: We are sharing this piece of content in the hopes that you will scrutinize every institution’s projects and spending.

The USD to LBP exchange rate at their stores is currently set at 8,000 LL, and is subject to a 20% discount upon purchase, to make it 6,400 LL as a temporary measure to keep up with the skyrocketing currency exchange rates in the black market.

This comes as the airport officially reopens after a four-month lockdown, with the government hoping that this would bring in tourists and expats with dollars desperately needed to salvage the crashing economy. Meanwhile, our national currency continues its free fall, plummeting to an all-time low and losing more than 75% of its value.

Despite continuous governmental “efforts” to manage the currency crash (including injecting dollars into the market and setting a higher rate for specific transactions), it seems as though chaos is still prevailing and the parallel currency market is thriving. But how much more can we take?
