Lebanon’s Minister of Labor Mustapha Bayrum announced yesterday the issuance of Decree 9129 which increases minimum wage for workers in the private sector in Lebanon by 1,325,000 LL—bringing it to a total of 2 million Lebanese Lira per month. This translates to around $74 as of today’s exchange rate.
Bayrum classified this as a small step forward towards justice for workers.
Lebanon’s monthly minimum wage previously stood at 675,000 LL which amounted to $450 prior to the Lira’s collapse. At a fluctuating exchange rate of around 27,000 LL to the dollar, this wage has amounted to less than $30 for over a year.
This had placed Lebanese employees amongst the lowest minimum wage earners worldwide.
