This year, Darmmess, based out of South Lebanon’s Deir Mimas, managed to secure their first-ever gold award for their early harvest extra virgin Darmmess High Pholenic. The social enterprise, which was founded in 2019, exclusively makes its oil from the vast olive fields of Deir Mimas, and describes itself as the “Bordeaux of Lebanese olive oils.” The decision makers at the World Olive Oil Competition clearly agree with that last part.
Darmmess’ olive oil is said to have a “complex yet harmonious taste,” combining “bitter spicy notes and a fruity aroma” to make a “liquid gold” that is “an elixir of life.” On the competition’s website, it is recommended that your pair the olive oil with food such as fried potatoes, raw beef, and pork vegetable stir-fry.
Speaking about this year’s win, founder Rose Bechara Perini said that “this Gold Award is the culmination of years of hard work. It is undoubtedly a significant milestone for us, for our farmers, our village Deir Mimas and Lebanon.”
