Mashrou’ Leila Has Reportedly Disbanded (For Now)

In an interview with the Sarde After Dinner podcast, lead singer of the Lebanese Indie band Mashrou’ Leila, Hamed Sinno, revealed that the band is not currently planning any projects together.

Sinno was asked if the “project is over” and if the bandmated plan on ever coming back, to which he replied “so far, no.”

The Lebanese band was formed at the American University of Beirut in 2008, and had 7 initial members: Hamed Sinno, Haig Papazian, Carl Gerges, Firas Abou Fakher, Andre Chedid, Omaya Malaeb, and Ibrahim Badr.

They have been influential on the Arab pop music scene, releasing a series of hit albums and beloved songs. The band is known for its genre-bending mixture of traditional eastern and western musical styles. Mashrou’ Leila are also known for speaking on important themes, such as love, revolution, and queerness.

The band’s championing of feminist and LGBT causes did get them into trouble, with their 2019 concert in Jbeil infamously cancelled after pressure from conservative Christians.

Fans of the band have expressed sadness at the rumors of a potential disbandment, lamenting the loss of one of the most innovative bands on the Arab scene. For many, the band represented a voice that could fight back against traditional discourses and make everyone dance along as they did so.

If Mashrou’ Leila is done for good, they can look back at a groundbreaking legacy of musical achievement. A deeply innovative musical style that captured the hearts and minds of millions. But for our sake, let’s hope the project isn’t actually over.
